Sevcon Displays Its Most Powerful Controller At EVS26

08 May 2012

Sevcon has unveiled its most powerful electric motor controller at the 26th Electric Vehicle Symposium (EVS26) in Los Angeles. The Gen4 Size 10 AC motor controller has been designed to meet the demanding requirements of high-performance electric and hybrid vehicles.

The Size 10 controller has a peak supply voltage of up to 800V DC, with a peak power output of up to 300kW and a continuous power output of up to 150kW. Its compact and rugged design make the Gen4 well suited to vehicle manufacturers' electric and hybrid applications, as well as EV conversions and EV drive train systems integration.

Sevcon uses a water/glycol coolant in the controller, which has a safe operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C, making it suitable for virtually all EV and hybrid applications. The hardware platform can handle both AC Induction and AC Permanent Magnet synchronous motor applications and 12V or 24V nominal control logic supply. Operating voltage range at full current is 50V to 800V with output motor phase current of 400A rms (2 min) and 200A rms (Continuous).

The Gen4 Size 10 is configurable as a motor slave, directly receiving torque or speed requests via its CANbus, and includes a fully-integrated set of inputs and outputs, eliminating the need for additional modules, controllers or connectors. This new Size 10 controller has been designed to meet the future needs of ISO26262 for on-road applications.

The controller can vary the allowed battery current via CANbus communication with a compatible Battery Management System, ensuring the power supply is both efficient and effective. Sevcon also offers a range of configuration tools for the Gen4 controller, allowing access to the CANopen bus for diagnostics or operating parameter adjustment.

The Gen4 Size 10 controller will be on display at EVS26 from 6th to 9th May.
